CHAPTER 2
Keyboard and Keyboard Skills
* QWERTY - 104 Keys
Latin based alphabet -Kweehr-tee.
* Touch typing
Keys of Keyboard
*Alphanumeric Keys -26 alphabet . they are not present in alphabetical order, instead they are placed in such a manner so that a user can work fast.
*Numeric Keypad - -0 to 9, Arithmetic operators,
Directional Keys, NUM lock, Insert, Delete, Enter, and the decimal point.
In the right side of keyboard we can use numbers for entering fast.
Keypad is just like simple calculator. numeric keys works in dual mode. NUM lock is provided to switch between the two modes.
When NUM lock is on, you can use numbers on the keypad. When NUM lock is off, the alternative functions can be used. Usually in keyboard of laptops do not have numeric keypad.
*Punctuations/ Special Keys: Punctuations such as comma, period ., semicolon; bracklets([]), parenthesis{}, and so on. Mathematical operator such as +, -,= etc.,

*Toggle Keys : on /off. Eg Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock Keys
toggle key ----Led Indicator on the keyboard
*Home Row Keys: left side A S D F.
Right side hand : L K J
*Guide Keys
F J are guide keys, Small raised tangible mark will be present.
* Positioning of fingers on the keyboard
*Typing and deleting text:
place cursor where you want to type.
press the letters on the keyboard.
use space bar to separate the words.
* Deleting text

CW
1. What are Home Row keys?
The Home Row keys are the row of keys of the computer keyboard your fingers rest on when not typing.
eg: asdf left hand, ;lkj right hand.
2. Why it is important to maintain a proper posture while working on a computer?
Maintain the correct posture as the typing posture minimises both static and dynamic muscle loads.
Correct position help you avoid health complications.
3. What is a pointing device? What it is used for?
It is an input device used to point at an object on the computer screen.
It is used to draw and play games on the computer.
4. What is difference between a mechanical mouse and an optical mouse?
The Mechanical Mouse has rolling rubber ball under the case of mouse.
The Optical Mouse does not have a ball.
Touch Typing
*It is a method of typing without the use of sense of sight, or simply by feeling the keyboard.
*Typing method utilizes muscle memory through rigorous training.

Chapter 3Q&A
1). What is a touch typist?
Answer – A touch typist is
someone who types without looking at the keyboard. Muscle memory helps the user
remember where the keys are available. Touch typists position their fingers in
the center of the row and know which finger to move and how much to move it in order
to reach any key.
2). Home Key – Home keys for the left hand are ASDF, and home keys
for the right hand are (semi-colon) LKJ.
3). Mention
any two advantages of touch typing.
Speed: The touch typing
skill is the significant increase in speed and efficiency. Time: Another
benefit of touch typing is accomplishing the work within a given time frame.
4). What is computer ergonomics?
Computer ergonomics is the science of refining the design of products to
optimise the workspace “fit” between each worker and his or her work
environment. This helps in increasing performance and reducing the risk of
strain injuries.
5). What is the
difference between gross typing speed and net typing speed?
• Gross,
or Raw speed is a calculation of exactly how fast you type with no error
penalties. The Gross typing speed is calculated by taking all words typed and
dividing it by the time it took to type the words.
• Net speed is a calculation of
exactly how fast you can type error-free. It is arguably the most useful tool
in gauging typing abilities. Since errors play a part in its calculation, it is
more a measure of typing productivity than of just typing speed
6). Define typing
accuracy with an example.
Accuracy in
typing means that you type the words accurately and correctly. Typing accuracy
is defined as the percentage of correct entries out of the total entries typed.
So, if you typed 90 out of 100 characters correctly, you typed with 90%
accuracy.
Both the Del or Delete key and Backspace key can delete text. However, when dealing with
text, pressing the Del key deletes text to the right of the cursor. Pressing
the Backspace key deletes text to the left (backwards) of the cursor.
8). FOUR COMMON MOUSE
ACTIONS
Action |
Definition |
Click-and-hold |
Press and do not
release the left mouse button. |
Left-click |
Same as click.
Left-click clarifies the action when there might be confusion with
right-click. |
Middle-click |
Press and release
the middle mouse button, without moving the mouse. |
9). WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY COMBINATION KEYS.? A key combination is the use
of two or more keys on a keyboard to generate a specific result. These keys are pressed at the same time, or one after the
other while holding down each of the previous keys. 10). . What is the importance of maintaining rhythm
in timing? Answer: In the touch typing
technique, the typing rhythm is very important. Typing rhythm means the
keystrokes should come at equal intervals. To control the constant typing
speed, the slow down indicator is used.
11). Which
operating system support rapid typing software? Windows ,linux, mac, unix are the major
operating system that supports the rapid typing software
